How is it calculated?

Volumetric flow (mm³/s) = extrusion width × layer height × print speed (mm/s). Speed limit = available flow / bead cross-section.

This uses a simplified rectangular bead cross-section. Real extrusion quality depends on filament, temperature, motion system and object geometry.

Frequently asked questions

Is my hotend flow limit constant?

No. It depends on temperature, filament type and nozzle.

Can I run at the calculated limit?

A safety margin and print-quality testing are recommended.

Equipment related to this calculation

Practical, non-promotional buying considerations. Future partner recommendations will be clearly disclosed.

3D printing nozzles

Nozzle size and type affect line width and achievable flow rate.

High-flow filament

Material and temperature affect extrusion limits; validate with a controlled test.

Frequently asked questions

How are flow rate and print speed related?

A simplified flow estimate is layer height × line width × toolhead speed.

Does the calculated speed guarantee a good print?

No. It does not capture every mechanical, cooling, adhesion or material constraint.
